The Fabric Collage Quilts of Susan Carlson
Through December 30, 2018

The New England Quilt Museum is proud to present The Fabric Collage Quilts of Susan Carlson, a retrospective spanning three decades in the evolution of this internationally recognized artist. Renowned for her intricate “fabric collage” technique, Carlson’s subjects include portraits, birds, insects, fish and a twenty-foot crocodile. She paints with fabric, choosing just the right prints to effect feathers, foliage, coral reefs, pink-cheeked children and mythological figures streaming across the cosmos. Carlson sometimes shades her work with layers of translucent fabrics, then completes the piece with free-motion quilting.

This exhibition of 32 works selected by the Museum’s Binney Curator is sure to delight viewers with its abundance of color, texture and imagery.

Selection from Wee Folk Players . Salley Mavor
Through December 30, 2018

Liberty and Justice: The Satirical Art of Salley Mavor includes 11 political satires or "cartoons," a short stop-motion film Mavor created with her husband, Rob Goldsborough, and a display case with the film's meticulous, hand-crafted figures and scenery.

Although Mavor’s foray into political art is the centerpiece, the exhibition also includes artwork from earlier in her 40-year career. The inclusion of these pieces tracks the evolution of her artistic journey from “innocence” to tackling real world issues.

Mavor explains, "I’ve had a wonderful career illustrating children’s books and designing little dolls, but around my 60th birthday I felt that something was missing and that the rest of my life as an artist would be different. I felt an urge to break away from safe and sheltered subject matter, and explore what was happening in the real world. Never would I have thought that this new direction would lead to political satire. Yes, the personalities of my dolls changed dramatically and moved out of the fairy house and into the white house!"

Explorations I: Inside the Quilt Artist's Studio
Through December 30, 2018

Have you have ever viewed an art quilt and wondered, “How did she do that?” From improvisational piecing to traditional embroidery, from digital design to eco-printing, today’s fiber artists draw on a wide range of materials and tools to add depth, complexity and texture to their work. This exhibition invites you inside the artist’s studio to learn about the extensive variety of techniques used by members of the MA and RI region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). Presented in two parts, each of the 24 artists is represented by an original 30” x 50” art quilt that showcases her signature technique. Co-Curators: Allison Wilbur and Nancy Turbitt.
