Mission statement: The Newcomb Art Gallery is dedicated to the enrichment of the cultural and intellectual life of the Tulane University and New Orleans communities. It aims to present exhibitions of national significance while seeking to preserve and promote the artistic traditions of Newcomb College and Tulane University.
Current exhibition: CREATIVE ENVIRONS: ART OF THE NEWCOMB POTTERY VOICES INSIDE: THE FORM AND FUNCTION OF BASKETS
With the opening of the 2010-2011 exhibition season, some of the finest examples of Newcomb craftsmanship will be on view in the Angela Gregory Gallery. The show, titled Creative Environs: Art of the Newcomb Pottery, will feature recent acquisitions such as a large 1902 vase with a stylized rock purslane motif (see image at left). Creative Environs will be presented in conjunction with Voices Inside: The Form and Function of Baskets. Drawn from private collections and public institutions, the baskets are of diverse materials and come from all regions of the United States. Together the two shows present objects that, while rooted in utilitarian traditions such as winnowing rice or storing food, over time have become prized works of art.
