73RD ANNUAL PAUL WHITENER STUDENT ART SHOW
Middle & High School VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

In the spirit of HMA’s mission, to bring people together and inspire creativity through the power of art, we proudly present this year’s student artwork. Even though we can’t visit the gallery to see the show, we can still bring the show to you. This year’s virtual exhibition will provide our community with the opportunity to view and vote for their favorite artwork. Voting will run from Friday, April 17 through noon on Saturday, April 25. The “People’s Choice” award will be announced on our website and Facebook page.

Thank you to all of the art teachers who’ve helped make this experience possible. As the saying goes, “the show must go on”!

…AND I NEED YOUR STATION WAGON: How HMA Acquired its Zabriskie Collection
Through October 4, 2020
Whitener Gallery

This exhibition features works Hickory Museum of Art acquired in 1954 from an auction of the George Albert Zabriskie Collection following his death. It includes some of HMA’s most beloved paintings such as Landscape by Thomas Cole, Pastoral Scene by Asher B. Durand, and Lake Louise by Edward H. Potthast.

In 1954, Hickory Museum of Art did not have the funds to purchase new acquisitions for the collection. Knowing that the Zabriskie Collection included works by prominent American artists who would make fine additions to the Collection, HMA’s founder and first director Paul Whitener asked museum supporter Laura Lee Wilfong for a loan of $1,000. After she agreed to loan the funds, Whitener followed up by saying “…and I need your station wagon” to pick up the artwork. Whitener then drove to New York City and purchased 22 paintings and books for the Collection.

Support provided by the Kenneth K. Millholland & Suzanne G. Millholland Endowment Fund, a component fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation.

JUAN LOGAN: Creating & Collecting
January 18, 2020 - May 10, 2020
Coe Gallery

Working out of his studio in Belmont, North Carolina, artist Juan Logan continues to expand the reach of his art’s unyielding call for social responsibility. A retired University of North Carolina Professor, Logan’s installations, sculptures, prints, and paintings are included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Art, and many more. Through his many exhibitions and a very successful career, Juan has amassed a never before seen collection of works from his friends and sources of inspiration in the art world. Not only will this exhibition will be the first to share his many holdings by the most important artists from the 1970s to the present, it will also be the first time Juan presents his own work in dialogue with his collection. The galleries will examine the role that Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Motherwell, Thornton Dial, and more have played in Juan’s own practice as an artist and how collecting has informed his creative process.
